I tried to post the below comment on Indi's blog post about Akon and Buddhism, but it didn't got posted on his blog due to some reason. I may not be able to follow it up, so I thought of leaving a post on my blog here. This is a response to Indi's following posts.
Did you think about why Madona is hated by many Catholics around the world, and Catholic church go with all guns fired, every time she go for a world tour? Even in Sri Lanka, how many Catholics we find, who hate Madona? Can Madona go to Rome? You wouldn't say a word about Madona Vs Catholicism debate, as "Catholicism/Christinism" is the idealism in your worldview. You see those as "supreme" and "taken for granted" and look down on Budhism and Islam as "third world, ignorant people's religions". You will say "no I'm not". But, your brain is programmed like that. You see the world, from that point of view only.Let me ask a question. Did you say a word, when Sri Lanka banned the movie "Da Vinci Code"? No. Cuz, it was banned due to objections from Colombo Catholics. If, Da Vinci Code was allowed to screen in Sri Lanka, we would have seen much more action than the MTV attack.Dear Indi! This is not a matter about Bhudists, Mulims or Sri Lankans. It's the basic human nature, no matter what religion they belong to or where they live. You take this (The music video in question) lightly, because it's not contradicting the culture in which you are brought up in. You have to look at it from the eye of the people who are involved in it.

This is a part of the conspiracy against Buddhist..
Why else would they invite Akon and not some one else.
//no matter what religion they belong to or where they live//
That is why no matter what the religion is, (now including Buddhism), all religions are destructive, counterproductive and evil.
And congratulations on finally Buddhists realizing their attitude toward to world have no practical use and learning thing or two form Catholics.
Hey, I think we are on the wrong foot here. For once I thought I agreed with Indi on that post.
It's true with Madonna and the catholic church, but is ours a Buddhist Church?
Church being a term for a organized religious institution, yeah with the Mahanayaka Theros and all that hierarchies and caste discriminations in practice, one may have the right to call us to be from the Buddhist Church. But at least, that's not what Buddha taught right? And I think that's not our culture either..
Are we from a culture that hate / fight / disrespect / kill everyone who offends our religion? Not for the heritage I know of.
Compassion and forgiveness is called to be our values, we were taught that's what makes us different from the rest... And I think Indi is along that line in that post..
I have not read indi.ca before. However, today after having read just two or three posts by Indi.ca I am wondering the picture voice in Colombo paint here about him or her is accurate. I cannot judge without doubt the values Indi.ca upholds buy reading one or two posts. Indi.ca is not exactly an ethno-religious nationalist who promote Mahasammatha wadaya. However it seems that he is capable of appreciating all cultures and religions for what they are, regardless of how it relates to us the islanders.
I may not be getting the voice in Colombo’s argument fully, but it seems to suggest that that larger religious mobs do exists elsewhere in the world, and therefore the small local mobs are justifiable. I for one, do not like to accept religious and cultural mobs are part and parcel of our lives. We as Sri Lankans can do better than to get “redda karata” and say “uge ammata” at the slightest provocation. Akon could be a bad artist that promotes bad taste, and he may not aware that Buddha statues are held in veneration by Buddhists. However, should we not be more concerned about the intolerance of so called Buddhists who seems it is a fitting response to throw stones at somebody’s property due to a disagreement about value systems?
As one of the previous commenter said, Buddhists are only justifying the label “Buddhist Church of Sri Lanka” and allowing them to be thrown to same bucket of unproductive and oppressive religious hegemonies of the world by such naïve acts of violence.
All religion is idle superstition. There are no gods, demons, spirits or ghosts; only men.
Having said that, religion is a part of many peoples lives and I have no issue with it as long as it remains a matter of personal belief.
Objecting to things on religious grounds is highly subjective because one persons belief is not the same as another's. Even people of the same faith will interpret the religious texts and practices differently, therefore the best policy is 'each to himself'.
Let me do what I think is right, let others do what they think is right. If people want to go to Akon's concert, let them. If there is something morally wrong in it, it they who will suffer. Those who choose a different moral path can rest assured in their superiority over the others who have chosen otherwise.
If people must object, they must do it peacefully, by writing letters or engaging in debate with others, not by use of force.
