According to him, he has already admitted that UNP cannot win this election. I'm watching the 360 Degrees, political talk show on TV Derana now, and few minutes ago he said that UNP decided to contest alone in this election, to avoid UPFA getting the bonus seats in each district, by letting JVP and smaller parties to claim the bonus seats by gaining more than 5% of votes.
He is saying, after the election UNP will come to an alliance with JVP and smaller parties to form a stronger opposition which can challenge the president and UPFA government.
So, don't be surprised and come up with election rigging stories on 9th April morning. Wajira Abewardane already accepted defeat!

They never learn. What all these guys are planing is to destroy what they can't get.

I think you have got something wrong. Bonus seat goes to the party that got highest number of votes. May be you/ranil meant national list seats?
One strong argument for alliances (as opposed to contesting alone and getting together later) is that it provides the bonus seat advantage.

I agree. It wasn't me who got this wrong. It was Wajira's explanation. According to him, if a smaller party get more than 5% of votes that will ensure them a 1 seat from the district. According to Wajira's logic, that 1 seat will be lost from the highest voted party's quota. I don't understand how, but he say's that's the advantage of contesting seperately.
Acording to his math, if JVP & UNP contest together and get 190,000 votes to secure 5 seats in Galle, UPFA will get 250,000 votes to secure 8 seats. If JVP contests alone, according to his logic they will secure about 25,000 votes (over 5%) and get a 1 seat. Wajira says, UNP will still get 5 seats with 165,000 votes while UPFA will have to sacrifice that 1 seat to JVP.
God knows how his math works!
