It was so hard for we Sri Lankans to believe that we lost the cricket world cup final 2007 to Australia. It was shocking! We whole heartedly backed up our boys, and we were damn confident that our guys deserved the cup and we must crush the Aussies. But then? We lost!! We lost big!! What did we do? We blamed the toss, blamed the rain, blamed Gilly's squash ball, blamed the umpires, blamed individual players. Did we stop at blaming? No. We speculated! We speculated that ICC will eventually rule Gilly's squash ball was illegal, and a re-play of the match will take place. We as a nation was shocked by that defeat; because we were soooooooooooo close to be crowned as the world champions of cricket.
But for rest of the world?
It was a one horse race from the begining. Aussies were having the best of odds to win the cup from day one, and we were just the underdogs. When Aussies won the cup, for rest of the world it was not a surprise. Because they knew that the most likely outcome of the match, and if Sri Lanka won; that would have been the upset.
Can't you relate the same thing happening with this whole drama of "post-election rumours"??
To all SF supporters!
Grow up and stop complaining! Accept your defeat, and respect democracy. If you know the basics of democracy, you wouldn't say 57% of Sri Lankans are idiots, simply because they voted the candidate you dislike. Sarath Fonseka is comprehensively rejected by a 57% majority of the people in this country. Almost all the election monitring bodies admit that there had not been any mass scale election violance this time. If we discount 5% (very generously) for abusing state media, state proerty, hora chanda here and there, and all the small incidents took place; still it is a 52% majority which is "democratic enough" to appoint Mahinda as the president.
Relax! Have a good sleep. Wake up. Start getting back to your daily life. If the decision of 57% of people is correct or not; we will debate in another 2 years may be. But now, what has happened has happened. Get it sound! Your candidate has lost. El - Oooo - Ess - Teee LOST!
What SF would have done is show the country that he is a real gentleman by accepting the result, blaming Mahinda for abusing state powers to win election, and then swearing to come back stronger in the general election. Instead he started acting like a circus clown in Cinamon Lakeside. All these "assasination attempts" are crap!
JVP must appologise the country for bringing this clown to politics. This cheater did not even have a registered vote in Sri Lanka and he kept on cheating the people until 3.30pm on the election day saying that "I will vote in another one hour".
All UNP supporters! You have a great party with good people. Start rebuilding your party and come back strong in next election. Kick out Mangala, Mano and Hakeem. Those are the idiots who ruined your campaign. Let Sajith to lead from front. Give more room for Dayasiri to speak. They are the future of your party! Don't let JVP parasites to kill you more!

In My Humble Opinion, you are eating your own tail by going to talk about 'democracy' here.. You seems one who do not respect democracy, do you?
This is the same talent what Wimal Weerawamsa (the idiot with a loud throat) has, alway one way
//You seems one who do not respect democracy, do you? \\
Elaborate please! You are burning in anger that much, so the idea you want to communicate is not clear to me.
i don't expect them to listen to your ( and others' ) excellent advice.
some may give up thro frustration, other will continue.
Very well said mate! Poor SF supporters were misled and convinced of his victory to such an extent that they are still trying to come in to terms that he was defeated roundly. As you rightly said these poor souls were in a fantasy world: far away from the reality. This situation is similar to what we witnessed soon after Prabhkaran was killed. The Eelam supports were so convinced by a false sense of invincibility of their Sun God that it took ages them realize his death. They were simply not prepared to accept the reality. Rumors were abound that the Sun God would repaper. This simply happened due to the fact that they underestimated their opponent: SL armed forces. Similarly, SF supporters underestimated the sheer scale of support of the rural Sinhala masses that had rallied behind President Rajapaksha.
I think General have voting rights in Sri Lanka just like grate many who do not have a registered vote in various elections because of weak bureaucracy. But then again, General should have declared this issue before the election and get over with it. Gambling that till the end of the day, knowing they are going to use it as the final card while the people are going to booths, is much like betting on a slow horse. And then again he did lot of other stupid things in his campaign too the greatest one been thinking he can actually win but I don’t blame him for that, because other side also thought he may have a chance of winning too.
And also the assassination story, I think you explain it very well. Everyone should accept it as crap and get over with it, that for everybody’s best interest specially Generals. But General should have known the drama would play as such at the end of the election. That is why he moved to the hotel and that is why army surrounded the hotel too, but I feel he should have selected more dramatic location than a hotel, may be a temple, and may be the temple of tooth could make drama more interesting. I think the best option left for him now is joining with Mahinda, if possible.
UNP, I don’t think there will be a stronger UNP or an actual opposition for quite some times. Opposition is traitors, and patriots don’t need traitors. So this is defiantly not Sajith’s time to shine. Ranil did the wise thing by abandoning General.
heeh...just after the election results i saw someone has posted that "Democracy is Dead in Sri Lanka"
There were no words to describe it..i think the opposition voters who are in utter disbelief have just become demented and acting crazy...
Mangala Samaraweera is the man who should take the responsibility of this defeat of SF. After all Sarath did not have political acumen contest elections. No one knew which side of the fence he is standing. Under pressure he became abusive, threatening the government officials of dismissal if he comes to power. The propaganda campaign originated by Managala to tell lies about the president and government officials did favour Sarath Fonseka for a little while. But when people start thinking and other misdeeds of SF started appearing the bogus propaganda started boomeranging because there were no facts to support. This type of unsubstantiated allegations will not hold well with any electorate for long. The statements continued to be played by the opposition will have a daring effect on them at the general election too. Opposition have show that they are a credible opposition with substance to govern the country without bringing unsubstantiated allegations against the government. The UNP should remember it was them who brought about this constitution with Ranil being a powerful cabinet minister. JRJ is famous for depriving Mrs. Bandaranike contesting the election by imposing a constitutional amendment when Supreme Court over ruled their actions. The famous undated resignation JR obtained from the MPs made a mockery of Parliament through they cry foul of degraded house. Selling of public assets for a song, un-peace accord, Gonawala Sunil type thuggery was introduced by none other than Ranil Wickramasinghe. We all need good governess. We want to praise good politicians. But we cannot accept this duplicity of the opposition.
This election is not valid. Govt violated so many election guidelines which include but not limited to mis use of public owned media and other assets, mis use of public officers, bribes to voters, mass scale vote rigging, threatening of election officers and altering election records. In other words it is another Saddam Hussein type election. This was confirmed by Election Commissioner’s post election speech. Everyone should look into this fact when they will be dealing with this illegally appointed President.
Please have the COURAGE to put your name at the bottom of the garbage you write !
Also be willing to "eat humble pie" in every sense of the word if you are proven wrong !
Don't think you can hide behind the anonymity of the internet and make such provacative statements to people who have supported good governance.

Slap your self as hard as you can see the result... Open your God given eyes and look around what the Self Acclaimed KING and the FAMILY has Done and Will do to this country with the so called Intelligent majority of 57%....ha ha ha... Guess this article is on its way to be declared as the JOKE of the Week.... ;) I will not declare my True name here cuz I am diagnosed with White Van Phobia...
'97 worldcup defeat - nice perspective
:)
it iwas this elevtion the frezy of Rajapaksha was well shown beyond doubts.and the best evidence to prove that the election was rigged and manupulated is provided by the commisioner of election by himself.and what is funny is with 40 days political experince Gen: Fonseka bags40% votes while Pres Rajapaksha was able to get only 57% with 40 years of poltical experince.
