JVP MP Lal Kantha speaking in a UNP meeting in Anuradapura was virtually “begging” the UNP supporters to come to the polling booths and vote “Hansaya” instead of “Aliya” on 26th January. Isn’t this funny? JVP extended their support to Sarath Fonseka, with the promise of ensuring Fonseka will receive the most (if not all) JVP votes. Now why the f**** is Lal Kantha urging the UNP supporters to come forward? Isn’t it the job of UNP leaders to make sure all UNP votes will go to Fonseka? Lal Kantha knows well that there are no big vote base left for JVP anymore. That’s why they “jacked” up Fonseka, instead of placing their own candidate. He can’t ask JVP supporters to come forward and vote, because he knows it will not make a difference! Why are we giving this much of importance to a party which cannot make a difference?

fonseka heading for even bigger defeat than i initially thought
Of course JVP has a very limited vote base, that's why they are urging the UNPers to vote, because they know that the UNP has the largest single vote base in the country. What is wrong in that? Apart from SLFP, no other party in the UPFA has a substantial and stable vote base. NFF or JHU doesn't even have what the JVP does.
JVP is different than other coaliation parties plugged in with UNP or SLFP. JVP is the self proclaimed 3rd alternative for this country. Unlike other minor parties, they maintained an identity throughout their history. They were suppose to build their own vote base nationally, and bargain that to influence the main parties. Where as other small parties only gathered a small vote base depending on ethnic or religious factors, or even regional factors and use that to bargain better deals for the minority groups they represents. They never boasted to create their own governments, like JVP did.
So, keep aside your "biaseness" and understand the fact that JVP is not comparable to SLMC, JHU, or CWC.
The truth is, JVP doesn't even have 3% of the total vote base of this country. To cover that truth, they are now pluging into either of the two main parties time to time. Their objective is to contest next GE in UNP list and do what they did to SLFP in 2004. Parasites!

Maybe bc without them a policy-less politician at that time called Mahinda Rajapakshe would have been definitely beaten at the 2005 presidential elections and may have even lost the leader of opposition post and maybe holding a nation building minister in a Wickramasinghe regime!
Fed up with the two major parties, people voted for the "alternative" in 2000 and 2001. All of a sudden, they had 10 and 16 MPs. If they had 2 or 3 instead of 16, would CBK have invited the JVP to form an alliance? It is true that they strengthened their clout by a huge margin by contesting from within the UPFA in 2004. But, we musn't forget that it was that JVP strength that immensely helped MR beat RW narrowly in 2005.
It is not fair to judge the JVP or any party's vote base for that matter in a national election by looking at the recent prov council elections or the circumstances that prevailed during the days when the war was fought. I don't think they will contest from the UNP in the general election, although the result of the pres. election could have an impact on this decision and if they do UNPers might vote for them. However, if they go solo, they might win around 8-10 seats.
Although I don't agree with their ideology, I'd like to some JVP representation in parliament, because it will keep the two major parties in check.
